5 Abortion myths that need to be shattered

Forty-three years ago, the milestone decision made by Supreme Court Roe v. Wade granted women in America the right to a legal abortion.  After four decades, it remains under attack. A particular aggressive campaign has been launched in recent years to go back in the past for women’s reproductive rights by conservative politicians. They have portrayed abortion as a dangerous, immoral, and painful procedure sought by women showing faulty judgments who will certainly regret their decision, and they have made use of those myths to defend a bunch of new laws and restrictions. Following are some often repeated myths you need to get clear.

  • Myth: Abortion is dangerous.

Reality: According to a 2014 study from the University of California, over 99.75% of pregnancy terminations do not cause major medical problems. Less than a quarter of 1% of abortions performed in the United States lead to major health complications. The study also tracked 55,000 women for six weeks after their pregnancy cancellations.

  • Myth: Medical abortions performed using pills are fringe

Reality:  About one in five abortions are medical abortion. In 2011 CDC found that 19% of pregnancy cancellations were medical abortions and that 28.5% of those took place in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.  One of the primary abortion institutes in the United States found that termination through buy abortion pill increased substantially from 2008-2011, which means that more women have cancelled their pregnancies with this alternative to surgery.

  • Myth: Fetuses experiences pains during abortions:

Reality: Fetuses do not undergo pain until at least the 24th weeks of pregnancy. In one of the researchers from UCSF found that fetuses cannot make out pain before 29-30 weeks of development.  Even so, why have so many states banned abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy? Many of the researchers by advocates of pro-life most frequently mentioned that their research does not prove anything about fetal pain.

  • Myth: The abortion rate in the United States is skyrocketing.

Reality: Since 1973, the abortion rate in the U.S. is being the lowest. The pregnancy ending rates has been on the declined for the years and has beaten its lowest level in 2011, as per the latest available data. The studies create partially credited the decline to better contraceptive use and long-lasting contraceptive options.

  • Myth: Women would never have terminated pregnancy if they knew what it was like to have a baby.

Reality: Majority of women who have cancel pregnancy are already mothers. According to a report, in 2008, 61% of women who ended pregnancies were mothers and 34% had two or more children.  In between 2009 and 2011, 72 % of women looking for abortions were already mothers. The main reason behind women having abortions is they want to protect the children they already have because they just can’t afford to raise another child. Hence, numbers of women not only in U.S. but across the globe buy abortion pills to avoid future problems.
