Complications in pregnancy due to obesity

Women who are obese during pregnancy may have a major impact on their and baby’s health. Being overweight in Pregnancy creates many possible complications, so you need to know them in order to promote a healthy pregnancy.

How can obesity affect your pregnancy?

Obesity increases the risk in pregnancy resulting in various complications such as:

  • Gestational Diabetes:

Obese women are more likely to have diabetes that develops during pregnancy known as gestational diabetes than women with normal weight.

  • Preeclampsia:

Women with obesity are at larger risk of pregnancy complications identified by high blood pressure and symptoms of damage to other organs, usually the kidney which can be also called as preeclampsia.

  • Infection:

Pregnant women who are obese are at increased risk of urinary tract infections. Fatness also makes you prone to postpartum infection, regardless of how the baby is delivered, vaginally or by C-section.

  • Delay in delivery:

Obesity might delay the pregnancy to continue beyond expected due date.

  • Labor problems:

In obese women, labor induction is more common. Corpulence can also interfere with working of some kinds of pain medication, such as an epidural block.

  • C-section:

Corpulence during pregnancy poses the risk of elective and emergency caesarian sections. It also increases the risk of complications from C-sections like, wound infections. An obese woman also has less chances of delivering vaginally after a C-section.

  • Pregnancy loss:

The risk of miscarriage is more in women who are obese.
